About Denttabs

Who is the founder?

Denttabs was founded by Axel Kaiser in the fall of 2003. Initially only as a project of the sister company proDentum Dentaltechnik, where the whole idea of Denttabs was born.

Axel is not a trained dentist, as one might assume. After graduating from high school, he initially trained as an automotive mechanic to give his then hobby a more professional foundation. In the course of his alternative service, he taught himself programming in the early 1980s and worked in the field until 1992, both as a technician and as a lecturer. As a photographer, he has incidentally photographed stars such as Michael Jackson or the Rolling Stones at their concerts in Berlin.

In 1992, he and his two brothers founded a dental laboratory in Berlin, intended as a sales organization for the parent laboratory in Singapore initiated by brother Christoph, and provided patients with high-quality dental prostheses that were significantly cheaper. As luck would have it, Axel was assisting one of the dental customers, Dr. Hendrik Eifler, with the practical part of his doctoral thesis, which involved developing a water-free toothpaste. The reason for this was the realization by Prof. Peter Gängler (then Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Private University of Witten-Herdecke and doctoral advisor for this thesis) that many ingredients were unnecessary for dental care potentially harmful for the body could be avoided. After several experiments and much research, a granulate was initially created. More out of curiosity, together with a contract manufacturer in Berlin, it was turned into a toothpaste tab first sold in the fall of 2003.

Besides Denttabs, Axel is on fire for sustainable business. In addition to Denttabs, he is involved with the Bundesverband für Nachhaltige Wirtschaft e.V. (BNW), is a founding member of Bürgerenergie Berlin (BEB) and politically active. He is a passionate sailor in his spare time and spreads his favorite hashtag "#WhenRightWasAlwaysWrong" wherever he can

When was Denttabs founded?

Denttabs originated with the production of the first toothpaste tab in 2003 in Berlin.

How did Denttabs come into being?

That's an exciting question. Let's go back a few years to 1992 when Axel first founded a dental laboratory (proDentum Dentaltechnik GmbH, Berlin) together with his two brothers. As luck would have it, Axel was assisting one of the dental customers, Dr. Hendrik Eifler, with the practical part of his doctoral thesis, which involved developing a water-free toothpaste. The reason for this was the realization by Prof. Peter Gängler (at that time Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Private University of Witten-Herdecke and doctoral advisor for this thesis) that many ingredients were unnecessary for dental care but potentially harmful for the body could be avoided. After several experiments and much research, they initially created a powder. More out of curiosity, together with a contract manufacturer in Berlin, Axel turned it into a toothpaste tab that was first sold in the fall of 2003. And it was the amazing feedback from users led to the tab becoming the center of attention from then on. The tab was initially launched as a proDentum project in the fall of 2003, from 1.1.2009, then in its own company, the Denttabs Innovative Zahnpflegegesellschaft mbH. Today, toothpaste tabs are already sold in more than 40 countries.

Where does Denttabs sit?

You'll find us in the courtyards in Berlin's Wedding district, between artists' studios and small businesses. Fun Fact: We sit not far from the Schering pharmacy, where Mr. Schering developed another tab: the birth control pill.

In which countries is Denttabs represented?

You can find our toothpaste tabs in over 40 countries, including UK, France, Scandinavia, Russia, USA (Unpaste), India, Australia and many more. Our goal is to continue to grow in the coming years and convince people worldwide to use our sustainable and innovative toothbrush tablets.

Where is Denttabs manufactured, where do you produce?

Denttabs is a Berlin-based company: This is where we manufacture our formulation, create the product design and act as a company. Berlin is our home for research and development. For the production of the tabs, we work with partners who have the professional and certified know-how. Our tabs are currently manufactured by a contract manufacturer in Poland. As we grow as a company, we are planning to build a new production center in Berlin.

Are you climate neutral?

We can proudly claim that we distribute a climate-neutral product. We have calculated and compensated the CO2 footprint of our Denttabs toothpaste tabs together with Climate Partner. Per bag of toothpaste tab, only 164.2g of CO2 are produced. This results in 1.31g CO2 per tab. Together we support a climate protection project for clean drinking water in Odisha, India (link to project).

How much CO2 do you emit?

Thanks to the tab form, we save considerable weight and volume, thus ensuring reduced CO2 emissions during transportation. Our packaging with 125 toothpaste tabs weighs 42g and is thus significantly lighter than conventional toothpaste, which weighs 75g on average (since our packaging with 125 toothpaste tab is equivalent to two conventional toothpaste tubes, it is even 150g). In addition, our toothpaste tabs are manufactured in the EU, which significantly reduces transport distances. Per bag of toothpaste tabs currently only 164.2g CO2 is produced.

Denttabs is the first toothpaste substitute that can be sold unpackaged and even minimally packaged saves large amounts of packaging. This also means that much less CO2 is released during disposal than with conventional toothpaste tubes.

The CO2 emissions generated in transport depend on the type of transport (means of transport, model), the weight of the goods, the size of the goods, the distance and the fuel used.

What does your supply chain look like?

We are constantly working to ensure the best quality ingredients and the fairest and most ecological orientation for our tabs. We prefer local suppliers from the EU with clear social and environmental transparency. We prefer long-term cooperation with suppliers and want to constantly strengthen our relationship with each other. A transparent supply chain and corporate responsibility along the supply chain is finally becoming more and more important: In June 2021, the 1st German Supply Chain Sourcing Obligations Act (LkSG) was passed and the EU is also currently drafting a directive for an EU supply chain law. The LkSG does not yet apply to us due to the size of our company, but we welcome strict laws in terms of responsibility along the supply chain. We are currently working on making our supply chain transparent and do not see the Supply Chain Stewardship Act as our standard, we want more. We want to be a pioneer and already be far more transparent than necessary and scrutinize our entire supply chain. We adhere to the UN human rights approach to corporate due diligence. Our toothpaste tabs are packaged and shipped in Poland and Berlin.

Do you have a Code of Conduct?

Denttabs does not have a fixed Code of Conduct at the moment. However, it is at the top of our list. We want to grow, and a Code of Conduct is an essential part of clearly defining company policies in the future.

Shelf life or MHD (minimum shelf life)

After opening the bag Denttabs have a shelf life of 1 year.

Denttabs toothpaste tabs

What flavors do you offer?

We offer our toothpaste tabs in Mint and Strawberry flavors. Mint is especially suitable for adults, as they are a little sharper in taste. Strawberry is specifically designed for children but is also very popular with adults. Try your way through and find your favorite Denttabs flavor.

What ingredients are in the mint tabs? What do the individual ingredients mean?

Microfine cellulose fibers (Microcrystalline Cellulose): The cellulose fibers in the toothpaste tabs are obtained from woody plant parts. Of course, FSC certified and grown in the EU. It is a long-chain polysaccharide that can polish your teeth ultra-smooth uto the interdental spaces. That's why new particles roll off the surfaces of your teeth. Coatings, also known as plaque, can practically not even arise.

Citric Acid: Stimulates the flow of saliva. The increased saliva flow with natural calcium and phosphate ions causes faster remineralization of the enamel and tooth.

Sodium Bicarbonate: Also known as sodium bicarbonate, in reaction with citric acid, adjusts the pH of the tablet to a neutral value during tooth brushing.

Silica (Silica): Serves as a gentle cleaning agent.

Amisoft (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate): A mild and natural surfactant consisting of vegetable fatty acids and the amino acid glutamic acid isolated from plant proteins. When brushing, it helps combine proteins, fats and carbohydrates with water to flush them out when rinsed.

Natural mint flavor: Provides the pleasant feeling of freshness in the mouth together with the stevia extract and menthol.

Eugenol: Part of our natural mint flavor. Eugenol is also known as a characteristic flavoring from cloves.

Xanthan Gum: A natural polysaccharide that is also used as a thickening and gelling agent. The toothpaste tab provides pleasant creaminess after chewing the tablet.

Stevia (stevioside): Sweet tasting plant, which together with the aroma and menthol provides the good taste. Stevioside are not sugar, but proteins that have a characteristic sweet taste. Therefore, stevioside can also not trigger tooth decay.

Sodium fluoride (Sodium Fluoride): Dient of the remineralization of tooth enamel and can help especially with sensitive teeth, but also with incipient caries.

Magnesium stearate (Magnesium Stearate): A vegetable excipient necessary for tab manufacture.

What ingredients are in the Strawberry tabs? What do the individual ingredients mean?

Microfine cellulose fibers (Microcrystalline Cellulose): The cellulose fibers in the toothpaste tabs are obtained from woody plant parts. Of course, FSC-certified and grown in the EU. It is a long-chain polysaccharide that can polish your teeth ultra-smooth up to the interdental spaces. Therefore, new particles can roll off the tooth surfaces. Coatings, also known as plaque, can practically not even arise.

Citric Acid: Stimulates the flow of saliva. The increased saliva flow with natural calcium and phosphate ions causes faster remineralization of the enamel and tooth.

Sodium Bicarbonate: Also known as sodium bicarbonate, together with the citric acid (Citric Acid), regulates the pH of the tablet during tooth brushing to a neutral pH.

Silica (Silica): Serves as a gentle cleaning agent.

Amisoft (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate): A mild, natural surfactant consisting of vegetable fatty acids and the amino acid glutamic acid isolated from plant proteins. When brushing, it helps combine proteins, fats and carbohydrates with water to flush them out when rinsed.

Natural Strawberry Flavor: Provides the great taste along with the stevia extract.

Xanthan Gum: A natural polysaccharide that is also used as a thickener and gelling agent. In the toothpaste tab, it provides pleasant creaminess after chewing.

Stevia (stevioside): Sweet tasting plant, which together with the aroma provides the good taste. Stevioside are not sugar, but proteins that have a characteristic sweet taste. Therefore, stevioside can also not trigger tooth decay.

Red Beet Root Powder (Beta Vulgaris Root Powder): Natural dye from the red beet, which provides a great color when brushing teeth.

Maltodextrin: A carbohydrate mixture derived from vegetable starch, which serves as a carrier for the beet powder and ensures that the natural dye is well distributed.

Sodium fluoride (Sodium Fluoride): Dient of the remineralization of tooth enamel and can help especially with sensitive tooth necks, but also with incipient caries.

Magnesium stearate (Magnesium Stearate): A vegetable excipient necessary for tablet manufacture.

Is Denttabs natural cosmetics certified?

Denttabs toothpaste tabs bear the recognized COSMOS Natural seal of the BDIH for controlled natural cosmetics. This applies to both our packaging and the tablets themselves. We must meet the following requirements to receive the seal:

No use of artificially produced dyes and fragrances, silicones, kerosenes and other petroleum products

Raw materials from dead vertebrates (e.g. animal fats, mink oil, marmot fat, collagen) are prohibited

Animal testing is prohibited in the manufacture, development and testing of the final products

The products must be manufactured in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner

Genetically modified organisms may not be used

The packaging materials must be made of recyclable materials and used as sparingly as possible. No plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene and other plastics containing styrene.

Can Denttabs cause allergic reactions?

Two ingredients can trigger allergies in Denttabs Mint toothpaste tabs:

Menthol: The substance provides fresh breath and leaves a pleasant cool feeling. He travels thereby through your mucous membranes and could cause allergic reactions.

Eugenol: Eugenol is part of our mint flavor and a potent allergen.

We will launch toothpaste tabs without menthol and flavoring for allergy sufferers in the future.

Can I use Denttabs with fluoride during pregnancy?

Since you spit out the toothpaste tab after brushing, you can use the tabs worry-free. In addition, we have heard from many users that Denttabs also works very well for them during pregnancy. This is because, unlike toothpaste, the non-foaming toothpaste tab does not cause nausea during brushing.

Can I swallow Denttabs?

You can swallow Denttabs without fluoride because of the harmless ingredients. For the variant with fluoride, we are required by law to put a warning on the packaging. This is a precautionary measure to prevent excessive swallowing of fluoride.

Are your products gluten-free?

Our products are gluten-free.

Do the toothpaste tabs contain glutamate?

Our ingredient Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate is not to be confused with the glutamates used in the food sector as flavor enhancers. Denttabs toothpaste tabs are glutamate and gluten-free.

Are Denttabs products vegan?

Denttabs toothpaste tabs and basically, all our products are 100% vegan. We have appropriate certificates and confirmations from all our raw material suppliers that both the ingredients and the packaging materials are vegan.

Is Denttabs cruelty-free?

Within the EU, it is not permitted to test cosmetic products and their ingredients or packaging materials on animals or to import and sell such cosmetic products. Based on this and our personal belief, Denttabs products are cruelty-free.

Do Denttabs contain or use palm oil?

We do not use palm oil directly in the production of our Denttabs toothpaste tabs. For two ingredients (magnesium stearate and sodium lauroyl glutamate), we cannot completely rule out palm oil in the manufacturing process. Since Denttabs is a certified natural cosmetic product, we receive certified proof from our upstream suppliers that the palm oil used comes from sustainable cultivation and meets certain minimum standards. Naturally, we are on the lookout for a palm oil-free variant for both raw materials. As soon as we can replace them while maintaining the same quality, we will implement this immediately.

You don't use titanium dioxide, but you still have a white tablet. How come?

We do not use any questionable ingredients, including titanium dioxide or artificial colors. Our tab consists of approximately 70% cellulose. This is naturally white and, therefore, our tablet.

Application

How to reduce the sharpness of the tabs?

Our toothpaste tabs contain menthol, which might be too intense for some tastes. Do you want to reduce some sharpness? No problem. Leave the tablets open for a few days and place them in a warm place. This will allow the menthol to escape and the spiciness to mellow.

Can Denttabs also be used with braces?

You wear braces? No problem at all. You can also use our toothpaste tabs. When brushing for the first time, it is possible that your saliva will not have the usual light color when you spit it out but will be slightly darker. This is due to the plaque being polished off from wires and brackets.

We recommend brushing twice in a row the first time. The second time, your saliva will be much lighter when you spit it out. A great advantage of brushing with toothpaste tabs is that the transition from the bracket to the tooth can be polished, thus preventing the formation of plaque and tartar. Our ultra-soft toothbrush with the rounded thin tips also supports here.

Can I use Denttabs even if I already have dentures?

We make dental care for people with and without dentures. Indeed, the principle of polishing also works without problems on crowns, bridges and inlays — the toothpaste tabs polish even removable dentures. However, please use only the visible parts. We recommend especially users with implants to pay attention to healthy, plaque-free teeth and regularly go to the dentist so that it does not come to inflammations.

How many tabs do you recommend per day?

We recommend 1 tab in the morning and 1 tab in the evening. To slowly approach the foam-free brushing experience, you can also take 2 tabs in the morning and 2 tabs in the evening for brushing. Should you ever feel like fresh breath during the day, you can also feel free to chew a tab in between and rinse your mouth with water.

What does the d on the tablets stand for?

The small d stands for Denttabs.

How does brushing with the toothpaste tabs work?

Brushing with Denttabs is unusual at first, but quite simple:

1. You take 1 tab in your mouth and chew it, for example, on your molars. Then you get a creamy consistency, not a foamy one. We deliberately use only a very gentle and natural surfactant.

2. You moisten your toothbrush and brush your teeth as usual.

3. Finally, rinse your mouth with water, done! How do your teeth feel now?

Effect

Are there any studies that prove the effectiveness of Denttabs toothpaste tabs?

We are pleased to inform you that Denttabs toothpaste tabs are a regularly studied oral hygiene product. In the last 20 years, 13 clinical studies and another 6 laboratory tests have been conducted. The studies have demonstrated the following:

Fluoride availability in the tab: Laboratory studies showed that fluoride distributes significantly better in the mouth than toothpaste due to its special formulation as a tablet.

Remineralization: laboratory studies have shown that the toothpaste tabs with fluoride bring a high remineralization potential, as the fluoride in the tab has been shown to dissolve very quickly in saliva and repair the affected areas on the teeth.

Removal of plaque: A clinical study found significant plaque reduction after 14 to 21 days with Denttabs toothpaste tabs.

Abrasivity: A clinical study showed that Denttabs toothpaste tabs, with their low abrasion value, removed plaque as well or better than toothpaste with a high abrasion value.

Is the fluoride content sufficient for adults?

The Cosmetics Regulation limits 1500 ppm for the total amount of fluoride in toothpaste to be sufficiently effective against tooth decay. Here Denttabs is precisely correct with 1450 ppm. This has already been confirmed in several test results, such as by consumer organizations in the Netherlands, Denmark, France and Belgium, and underlined by laboratory tests.

.

Is the fluoride content sufficient for children?

Our toothpaste tabs are within the standard range of 500 ppm for children. 500 ppm is a guideline value that is recommended and internationally recognized.

Is the fluoride in your tabs harmful?

We use sodium fluoride for the Denttabs toothpaste tabs. Sodium fluoride can become harmful in large quantities and toxic in excessive doses. This would become noticeable at the earliest from an amount of 350 mg. Not to worry: with 0.48 mg per tab in the mint version for adults, you don't have to worry with Denttabs toothpaste tabs. The amount of sodium fluoride is harmless.

From how many tabs is the fluoride harmful or even fatal if swallowed?

Sodium fluoride can become harmful in large quantities and toxic in excessive doses. This would become noticeable at the earliest from an amount of 350 mg. Don't worry: At 0.48 mg per tab in the adult mint version, Denttabs would be dangerous to you at more than 729 toothpaste tabs at a time. And we doubt that this is even possible. 😉

Why is there no calcium fluoride in the tabs?

To answer this question, there is a short chemistry excursion for you:

Fluorine is a highly reactive gas as a chemical element. It combines very quickly with other elements and therefore does not occur freely in nature, but mostly as salt compounds, so-called fluorides. As a salt, fluoride is preceded by the respective name of the other substance with which the fluoride combines, e.g., sodium fluoride. Each salt has different properties, e.g., in terms of solubility in water. For example, the natural mineral calcium fluoride is insoluble in water, while sodium fluoride is highly soluble in water. In your mouth, the sodium fluoride combines with your saliva, dissolves and spreads on your teeth. This is not possible with calcium fluoride.

Sodium fluoride is also the best experimentally and clinically studied molecule globally in terms of fluoride ion bioavailability as a critical promoter of remineralization.

Why do you offer fluoride-free tabs?

Toothpaste tabs without fluoride are suitable for babies and toddlers who do not spit out reliably after brushing their teeth.

The skepticism about fluoride-containing dental care is based on a misunderstanding: many are unaware that the fluoride used in toothpaste is not the highly toxic and gaseous fluorine, but the salt sodium fluoride. This occurs in many minerals in nature and is added to toothpaste or table salt.

At this point, we would like to emphasize that fluoride alone is not sufficient for healthy oral hygiene. A healthy diet with little sugar supports dental health and ensures healthy oral hygiene.

Why do we need fluoride for teeth?

Short version:

Simply put, fluoride forms a kind of protective film around your teeth and protects them from caries. To get a better grip on fluoride, it helps to understand how tooth decay occurs in the first place:

Our teeth are made up of enamel, dentin and dental cement. Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and is composed mainly of calcium and phosphate. Our teeth are surrounded by a biofilm (plaque) that contains numerous microorganisms. These bacteria break down carbohydrates from food into acids. The acids damage the tooth because they dissolve calcium and phosphate from the enamel, thus softening it. Fluoride counteracts this. It improves the remineralization of the teeth by helping to reincorporate the minerals into the tooth lattice. It also builds up the enamel and makes it more resistant to acids. The enamel thus regains an entire surface.

For whom are the tabs with fluoride suitable, for whom without fluoride?

Generally, we recommend fluoride for all people who want to protect their teeth from caries. Especially users with pain-sensitive teeth have told us about positive experiences with our fluoride toothpaste tabs.

What does remineralization mean?

Remineralization means "rebuilding of minerals." Our teeth are surrounded by a biofilm (plaque) that contains numerous microorganisms. Remineralization can stop or even repair tooth decay in the early stages. This is where our saliva plays a significant role: it consists of water, proteins, and minerals, such as calcium and phosphate. Demineralized teeth, i.e., damaged teeth, can insert these minerals like small building blocks into decalcified (demineralized) areas and thus maintain the protective enamel. Fluoride accelerates this process. Denttabs toothpaste tabs with fluoride have an optimal remineralization potential, as the fluoride in the tablet has been proven to dissolve very quickly and only in saliva, repairing the affected areas on the teeth. Denttabs allow the tooth to rebuild and recover.

Do Denttabs protect against caries?

In general, dental care products should bring two functions to protect against caries:

1) A high bioavailability of fluoride ions in saliva for remineralization.

2) Efficient plaque removal with gentle abrasiveness.

Both have been proven to Denttabs in numerous studies and laboratory tests.

Added to this is the polishing effect with our cellulose. Pigments from food, especially the short-chain carbohydrates that serve as food and thus acid-forming agents for a particular type of bacteria, can adhere poorly to polished surfaces. Therefore, our toothpaste tabs protect wonderfully against caries.

How do I protect my interdental spaces?

The cellulose in our toothpaste tabs, together with our bamboo toothbrush with its soft and tapered filaments, polishes your teeth smoothly right into the deep interdental spaces. If you also use dental floss or an interdental brush, you are optimally equipped.

What is abrasiveness?

Abrasiveness expresses the degree to which a dental care product wears down or abrades the tooth. It is made measurable by the RDA value (RDA = Radioactive Dentin Abrasion), which is taken as a guide value for the cleaning effect. Abrasive dental care products aim to remove plaque without attacking the enamel. So when buying your dental care product, make sure that they do not contain any abrasive substances or surfactants that are too aggressive. Denttabs, with an RDA value of 21, brings a polish that is gentle on teeth and incredibly effective.

What is the abrasion value of Denttabs?

The abrasion value, also called the RDA value, of Denttabs is 21, which stands for very low abrasiveness. Silica and small amounts of the gentle surfactant sodium lauroyl glutamate ensure the low abrasiveness and an equally desirable reduced foaming.

However, this does not mean lower cleansing efficacy. In a clinically controlled study, three differently abrasive toothpaste were compared: A whitening toothpaste with an RDA of 162, a tooth gel with an RDA of 0, and Denttabs with an RDA of 35 (at that time, a value of 35 was estimated; in 2021, an RDA of 21 was calculated for Denttabs by the consumer organization Consumentenbond from the Netherlands). The cleaning performance achieved across all measured tooth surfaces averaged just over 50% for all three kinds of toothpaste (toothpaste: 50.9%, Denttabs: 54.4%, tooth gel: 51.6%). Denttabs thus achieved the best cleaning performance. A common perception is that plaque can only be cleaned away with a high level of abrasiveness. The study proved the opposite.

Do Denttabs have a high abrasiveness because of polishing?

Typical commercial toothpaste is around 50-70. We are at an RDA value of 21, which corresponds to a very low abrasiveness.

Sustainability

Where do your ingredients come from?

Our mint toothpaste tabs have 12 ingredients, the strawberry tabs 13. This of course makes it much easier to control raw material purchasing, although the supply chain is complex even with just a few ingredients if you want to trace it from its origin. We have fixed suppliers through whom we source the ingredients for our Denttabs. We work with our immediate suppliers to understand their working processes as well as their supply chain. We prefer local EU suppliers who themselves have clear social and environmental transparency and are happy to work with us. A transparent supply chain is our big goal. We are currently working hard to be able to tell you as customers more about our supply chain and to make it more open. But this still needs some time.

Is the cellulose FSC certified?

We source cellulose through our partner from FSC-certified forests in Sweden. The biodiversity, water content and water quality of the soils, and the CO2 storage capacity and the persistence of the forest are secured.

Is Denttabs suitable for traveling?

Denttabs is the ideal travel companion for short and long trips, spontaneous city breaks, or camping vacations. The toothpaste tabs are light and water-free, so you can take them anywhere and spit them out in nature due to the natural ingredients. Do you already know our practical and sustainable travel box? It saves space and protects the tabs from moisture. You can find it in our online store.

Can I spit the Denttabs foam into nature when camping?

Everything contained in Denttabs toothpaste tabs is biodegradable. Therefore, it is fine to use Denttabs, e.g., when camping, and spit it out into nature.

Denttabs toothpaste tabs for children

Is Denttabs also suitable for small children?

Our two Denttabs Strawberry variants with and without fluoride are suitable for children from 3 years and their small milk teeth. To avoid excessive swallowing, we recommend brushing for children under six years only under supervision.

Is the risk of ingestion high?

To ensure that children do not swallow the toothpaste tabs, we recommend placing the tablet on the wet toothbrush before brushing and allowing it to soak for about 30 seconds. Once the tablet softens, the teeth can be brushed without worry. We recommend brushing teeth for children under six years of age only under supervision.

Can Denttabs tabs be swallowed by children?

We have two variants for children: one with fluoride and one without fluoride. Children can swallow the variant without fluoride without hesitation. For the variant with fluoride, we are required by law to put a warning on the packaging. This is a precautionary measure to prevent excessive swallowing of fluoride.

Test results

What do you say to the Ökotest result?

We find it a great pity that the German Ökotest did not recognize our studies. These prove both the fluoride effect and the remineralization of the toothpaste tabs. All studies and laboratory tests are available to Ökotest. We remain open to further discussions and constructive exchanges in the future.

What is your position on the Stiftung Warentest article?

The Stiftung Warentest does not refer to the existing in vitro studies laboratory tests of Denttabs. In numerous laboratory tests by the University of Witten-Herdecke, the dental specialists proved that Denttabs with 1450 ppm has a sufficient fluoride effect under optimal conditions. This could now also confirm four other European consumer organizations.

How has Denttabs performed in test results so far?

We are pleased that Denttabs has always scored good to very good in several European consumer organizations' test results on toothpastes as the only toothpaste tab:

France (Que choisir): 3rd place out of 15 products

https://www. quechoisir.org/comparatif-dentifrice-n677/denttabs-with-fluoride-125-tabs-p245710/

Netherlands (Consumentenbond): ranked 2nd out of 18 products

https://www.consumentenbond. nl/mondverzorging/test-tandpasta

Denmark (Forbrugerradet Taenk): ranked 1 out of 9 products

https://taenk.dk/test/tandpasta

Belgium (Test Aankoop): ranked 5 out of 17 products

https://www.test-aankoop.be/gezond/dagelijkse-verzorging/geteste-producten/test/koopwijzer-tandpasta/resultaten

The fluoride effect, the less abrasive and thus tooth-friendly cleaning, the natural and harmless ingredients, and the packaging were particularly highlighted in the individual test results.

Denttabs toothbrushes

Which toothbrush should be used for the toothpaste tabs?

We recommend you use Denttabs toothpaste tabs with an ultra-soft toothbrush, e.g. our Denttabs bamboo toothbrush. Basically, the softer the toothbrush, the better for the polishing effect of the toothpaste tabs.

Why do we not recommend an electric toothbrush?

Those who brush their teeth with their electric toothbrush and Denttabs need not worry. Polishing is all about creating the smoothest surface possible. The soft bristles of our Denttabs Bambuu Brush make your teeth extra smooth. On polished surfaces, new particles roll off the tooth surfaces. Coatings, also known as plaque, can practically not even arise.

How long do the toothbrushes last?

We recommend changing the toothbrush every 3 months. We have heard from users that they simply wash their brush in the dishwasher, for example, to kill germs.

Do bacteria and dirt settle in the wood?

The bacteria from your oral cavity also settle on your toothbrush. Therefore, it is essential to clean your toothbrush regularly under running water. If necessary, the toothbrush can be washed in the dishwasher or cleaned with water heated to over 60 degrees.

Why did you choose bamboo?

Bamboo is perfect for oral care due to its antibacterial and odor-resistant properties. In addition, bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and is biodegradable. Giant bamboo, for example, grows up to 20 meters high within a few months. In addition, the material is very durable and does not require pesticides or fertilizers.

Why are bamboo toothbrushes better than plastic toothbrushes?

With a consumption of 4 toothbrushes per year, we end up with 332 million toothbrushes in Germany alone that end up in the trash every year. Plastic consumption in Germany is still rising, and over 60% of plastic waste is not recycled but burned for energy. The bamboo toothbrush is biodegradable except for the bristles, so you can dispose of it in the organic waste garbage can or on the compost pile after removing the bristles.

Bamboo toothbrushes also have a better eco-balance than plastic toothbrushes. It is shown, for example, in a 2020 study comparing different toothbrushes. The entire life cycle (even including water consumption when brushing teeth) was taken into account. Twenty bamboo toothbrushes (i.e., five years of brushing teeth) emit 4.22 kg of Co2 equivalents. Twenty plastic toothbrushes emit 25.6 kg Co2 equivalents, which is 6x more than the bamboo toothbrush. The bamboo toothbrush performs best among the toothbrushes tested in the study.

What are the components of the Denttabs Bambuu Brush?

Our Denttabs Bambuu Brush consists of a bamboo handle made of Chinese bamboo, ultra-fine bristles made of PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), and a metal clip that holds the bristles together in the head.

Where does the Bambuu Brush come from?

Our Denttabs Bambuu Brush comes from the manufacturer @BambuuBrush Ltd. and is made in China. @Bambuubrush donates 10% of its profit to the social project Plastic Swap Shop of the Humanitas Charity Organization, which created the project together with @Bambuubrush. You can find more info here: https://www.humanitascharity.org/bambuuproject

Isn't the transport and mining of bamboo also harmful to the environment?

Transporting bamboo to Europe causes large amounts of harmful greenhouse gases. Ultimately, one has to wait and see the further development of the still small market. Nevertheless, due to its fast growth and high CO2 storage capacity, bamboo is more sustainable than the wood of most trees.

Why are soft bristles important for teeth?

Our ultra-fine bristles, in combination with Denttabs, ensure a remarkably smooth tooth surface. New particles roll off the tooth surfaces on smooth or polished surfaces. Plaque, also known as plaque, is practically prevented from forming in the first place.

In addition, you also protect your gums and prevent gum injuries.

What are the bristles of the Bambuu Brush made of?

Our charcoal-enriched bristles are made of PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), a plastic that is particularly flexible and dimensionally stable.

Is it necessary to moisten the toothbrush?

For a pleasant brushing experience, we recommend moistening the toothbrush.

Why no other wood?

The fiber orientation of the bamboo wood is very uniform. This means that there is less risk of hurting your mouth. In addition, the wood is very hard, and it does not swell in contact with water. Bamboo is, in principle, more sustainable than the wood of most trees due to its fast growth and high CO2 storage capacity.

What garbage can I throw the Bambuu Brush in?

After you remove the bristles of our Bambuu Brush with pliers or break off the head, you can throw it on your compost pile or in the organic waste garbage can. The bristles (or the head) can be disposed of in the yellow bag.

Is Denttabs plastic-free?

Denttabs packaging is composed of 45% paper and 55% inner biofilm. The biofilm, in turn, is composed of a polymer layer that is 63% polylactide (PLA based on corn starch) and 37% PBAT polymer.

Both PLA and PBAT are biodegradable and industrially compostable. This means that the packaging has been proven to decompose under certain conditions (temperature, moisture, and oxygen supply). Denttabs packaging is therefore also certified for industrial compost, which means that it has been proven to degrade 90% in industrial compost after 90 days under the required composting conditions. Strictly speaking, the packaging is not plastic-free, as it contains 1.2g of the degradable polymer film, as described above. Currently, we are already working on an even more ecological variant.

Why does your previous packaging say "plastic-free"?

That's a fair question. We can best answer it by giving an overview of Denttabs' packaging history and elaborating a bit:

Denttabs started in 2003 with classic plastic packaging. The packaging material is 100% high-density polyethylene (PE-HD). No recyclate, no bio-based plastic, not biodegradable.

Then in 2019, the big breakthrough: a bio-based, biodegradable packaging based on corn starch. Other advantages: it can be transported in a space-saving way thanks to its bag shape and weighs about 2.8g (about 1.12g film and 1.68g virgin paper). Thus, we save resources and especially plastic waste.

Let's look at toothpaste packaging: In Germany alone, nearly 40 million toothpaste tubes are sold and disposed of each month. The scary thing is that the recycling process is almost impossible. The tubes are mostly made of different materials, are made from fossil petroleum, and contain up to 14% unused toothpaste residue, which excludes them from the recycling process.

For us, our packaging (which was new at the time) no longer had much in common with traditional plastic. So, we decided to call it "plastic-free." In the meantime, we see things a little differently. We are also learning and working on our transparency.

In the meantime, the designation plastic-free is no longer on our packaging because, strictly speaking, it is not plastic-free packaging. We use industrially compostable packaging based on PLA, a corn-based bioplastic that is bio-based and biodegradable. There is no (micro)plastic in the toothpaste tabs themselves. Industrially compostable packaging has a higher environmental quality than conventional packaging, and it is compostable under industrial conditions. We are currently fighting for industrial compostability with the closed-loop packaging initiative. We are working at full speed on an even more innovative solution, and you will be the first to know about it.

What is your packaging made of?

It consists of an outer ink-printed paper layer (40%), adhesive (5%), an inner biopolymer layer (55%) made of polylactide (PLA; based on corn starch) and fossil raw materials, and a water vapor barrier made of aluminum oxide or ceramic (<1%).

All packaging is certified for industrial compost, meaning it has been proven to degrade 90% in industrial compost after 90 days.

Unfortunately, industrial compostable does not mean that the packaging can go into the organic waste garbage can. We ask you to put the Denttabs packaging in the yellow garbage can so that it is disposed of properly. Unfortunately, it is still incinerated in the yellow garbage can. We see the potential in the yellow garbage can disposal route to recycle or compost in a controlled manner in the future, depending on the material.

We are also currently working on garden-compostable packaging, which we intend to launch next year.

How much does a bag of Denttabs toothpaste tabs weigh (compared to a toothpaste tube)?

Our package of 125 toothpaste tabs weighs 42 grams and is designed for two months of brushing. Compared to a standard toothpaste for two months with 150 ml, we weigh 70% less and thus save CO2 during transport.

How can I recycle your packaging?

Industrially compostable does not mean that the packaging should go into the organic waste garbage can. The German disposal system is not yet prepared for this. In the meantime, we ask you to throw the Denttabs packaging into the yellow garbage (plastic recycling) can so that it is disposed of properly. It is still mostly incinerated in this way. However, we see in the disposal route via the yellow garbage can at least the potential to recycle or compost in a controlled manner in the future, depending on the material.

In parallel, we are working on garden compostable packaging that you can compost in your garden at home in the future.

What is the composting process of the packaging?

The entire packaging is certified for industrial compost, i.e., it has been proven to degrade 90% in industrial compost after a maximum of 90 days. The extent and speed of the decomposition process depend on the environmental conditions of temperature (60 degrees), humidity, and oxygen supply. The product of composting is compost, which mainly serves as a source of nutrients (fertilizer) for plants. Compost also plays a crucial role in the recycling of soils, which then act as CO2 storage.

Can I throw the packaging in the home compost?

You can't currently put our packaging in your home compost. However, we are currently working on creating a garden compostable package for you. In the meantime, we ask that you place the Denttabs packaging in the yellow garbage can for proper disposal.

What happens if I throw the packaging into the sea?

First of all, please don't do that. Our packaging is industrially compostable. It is not degradable in the sea - at least not fast enough. PLA would take over 1.5 years to degrade in the ocean, according to the Federal Environmental Agency. There is (at least at the moment) no bio-based plastic that is degradable fast enough in the sea without causing significant damage and littering the oceans.

How do I store Denttabs in the bathroom?

To ensure the long-lasting freshness of Denttabs, you should decant and store them in an airtight container after opening.
